Eligibility Policy: All students will be subject to KSHSAA eligibility requirements. These requirements are as follows:
• The student shall have passed in at least five subjects of unit weight the previous semester of the last semester in attendance.
• The student shall be enrolled in five subjects or courses of unit weight and in attendance during the present semester.
• A first semester high school student’s eligibility is based on middle school eligibility standards (five subjects of unit weight).
Per KSHSAA policy Rule 7: Section 1, all students-athletes are required to have a physical on file to be eligible to participate in interscholastic activities. Any physical taken after May 1st will count toward the following school year (KSHSAA Rule 7: Section1: Art. 5).
Students that have failing courses are subject to study halls, extended learning opportunities, extra conditioning and other discretionary measures as outlined. No suspensions or limits on wrestling time will be imposed due to failing grades, unless a student becomes academically ineligible per KSHSAA guidelines. Eligibility suspensions are handled through Administration and will be communicated to coaches before each semester of any student that did not meet the eligibility requirements outlined above.
Practices : Practice will run from 4:00 P.M. – 6 P.M. Monday thru Thursday. Fridays we will practice from 3:00 P.M - 5:00 P.M. Practices are closed session practices as we have much to work on in a limited amount of space.
Practice Gear: Wrestling shoes are required and are to be worn only on the wrestling mats. NO STREET SHOES ALLOWED!! Head gear is not required in practice but is recommended and must be worn during competition. Please bring in new clothes every day and TAKE ALL OF YOUR PRACTICE CLOTHES HOME.
Appearance: In accordance with the 2016-2017 NFHS Wrestling Rules, during competitions all wrestlers must have hair trimmed, nails must be cut and you must be clean shaven. The officials will be looking for this before the meet starts. They are also looking for any type of ringworm, infintigo, and infected zits/pimples. There are forms that can be filled out by a doctor that may let them wrestle depending on skin condition. Those must be done before the day of the meet. If you child has braces they must wear a mouth guard to cover them up; top, bottom, or both.
Dress for Success: BHS Wrestlers must have pride in their selves and in whom they are representing. Wrestlers are required to dress respectfully and professionally on the day of competitions, both home and away. A collared shirt and a pair of Dockers or slacks will be worn. NO JEANS and NO T-SHIRTS are to be worn unless the student athlete has received prior approval from the coaching staff.
Behavior at Competitions: In the area of athletic competition, an athlete is expected not to use profanity or illegal tactics. He should be gracious in defeat and modest in victory. However, if you have nothing good to say to your opponent, leave the mat rapidly. A true athlete maintains control at all times. Officials in a match are there for the purpose of insuring both wrestlers that they will receive a fair contest. OFFICIALS DO NOT INTENTIONALLY LOSE A MATCH FOR YOU. Any behavior contrary to the above is a direct reflection on the school, team and coaches, and will not be tolerated.
Code of Conduct: (see 2016-2017 Student Handbook)– It is a privilege to be a member of the Bluestem High School Wrestling Team. Student- athletes not only represent themselves but, their family, community, and USD #205. Student athletes are viewed as ambassadors and should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of the school. In order to insure this conduct school administrator, athletic directors, coaches, sponsors, and participants will cooperatively enforce this code. Members of the BHS Wrestling team who fail to abide by this code are subject to disciplinary action as prescribed by the code.
Varsity Letters: To earn a varsity letter you must wrestle in at least 5 varsity matches earning no less than 12 team points throughout the year. 6 points = pin, 5 points = tech fall (win by 15 or more), 4 points = major decision (win by 8-14 points), 3 points = decision (win by 7 points or less). The student athlete must finish the season and also abide by the athletic code, and display good sportsmanship.
Uniforms: Uniforms are handed out at the beginning of the year and are your responsibility until the season is over. School activity/athletic equipment (including uniforms, warm-ups, jackets, travel bags, and other items) shall not be used at any time other than at authorized practices or matches, unless the athletic director gives special permission. All uniforms are numbered and those numbers are wrote down and filed. If you lose your uniform you will have to replace it.
Questions/Concerns: If you have any issues or concerns please look to the Student Handbook as you will find answers to most questions concerning rules and regulations. The BHS Wrestling program fully supports all rules and regulations set forth within the Student Handbook.
